More About Gold

Gold has been valued by humanity from the beginning. It’s elemental symbol is AU which comes from the old Latin name aurum, meaning “shining dawn” or “glow of sunrise”,  quite fitting for gold’s brilliant hue of yellow.   It has been supposed that our reserve of gold was a result of a bombardment of meteorites more than 200 million years after earth was formed.  This rare beautiful  earth resource is not just for jewelry and coins, it has been used in a variety of different ways over the years.

To name a few, Gold is used in coinage and is the standard for many monetary systems. Gold is used for jewelry, dental work, plating, and reflectors. Chlorauric acid (HAuCl4) is used in photography for toning silver images. Di-sodium aurothiomalate, administered intramuscularly, is a treatment for arthritis in feet. Gold leaf can also be beaten so thin, it  can become transparent.

Gold is the most Malleable metal known to man. Just one ounce of gold may be hammered thin enough to cover more than 9 square meters (96.9 square feet) of a surface. The gold leaf may be only 0.18 microns (seven millionths of an inch) thick; a stack of 7,055 sheets would be no thicker than a dime.

There are numerous qualities of gold:

Twenty-Four karat gold for all purpose is pure gold

Twenty-two karat gold is 91.6% Au

Eighteen karat gold is 75% Au  This is the most popular karat for gold jewelry, as it’s strength copes well with holding gemstones such as diamonds and emeralds in place, without the prongs weakening and the gems falling out.

Fourteen karat gold is 58.3% Au

Nine karat gold is 37.5% Au
